Accident at work – Will I put my employer out of business?

Most employers will have insurance in place to cover any accident at work personal injury claim

If you suffer an accident at work and are considering making a claim for personal injury you will have many concerns to think about.

One of the main concerns we have noted is when a client fears that their employer will have to pay out a lot of money to cover the cost of the claim.

Unbelievably (and we have blogged about this more then once!!!!!) employers are not legally obliged to hold a policy of employers liability insurance.  This is mandatory in the UK.  However the vast majority of employers in Ireland will hold such cover.  Please scroll through previous blog posts for our rants on this issue

Normally such claims are covered by an insurance company.  This acts in the same way as your car insurer would cover you if you caused damage to another car or caused personal injury to another car driver.

The bottom line is that your employer will not have to pay.  Your employer’s insurance may go up the following year alright, but there is not much you can do about this.  If an employers is keen to help reduce their premium they should speak with their insurer for advice on how to create a safe work environment for the employees in order to minimise the chances that an employee will suffer personal injury as a result of an accident at work.
